A Myochin-School Iron Articulated Model of a Snake. Meiji period (late 19th century). The russet-iron snake constructed of numerous hammered plates joined inside the body, the head carved with scales and fitted with a hinged jaw opening to reveal a movable tongue, eyes finished in shakudo and gilt.

The impressive vessel modeled after the archaic bronze vessel Li Ding and also ceramic censers from the Song dynasty. Known form from the 16th through 18th century. An example of a censer of similar form and size, but with a rounded foot is part of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
